Honkers take 4th in Sound Invitational

The Northwest Honkers took 4th in the Sound Invitational this weekend facing off against the Seattle Studs, Everett Merchants and Thurston County Senators.

In game one of the tournament the Honkers faced the Thurston County Senators at Everett Memorial Friday night. Honkers Dalton Gervais pitched six innings for the loss 9-4. Honkers Shane Dixon came in for relief pitching one inning giving up only one hit and striking out two. Center fielder Chris Bradshaw had a triple in the game for the Honkers and short stop Kyle Mall had a double. Honkers were down 9-1 going into the bottom of the eighth when they rallied back with three with catcher Casey Fithian hitting in two.

In game two of the tournament at St. Martins University, Honkers JD Scholten pitched a complete game for the loss 5-3 to the Everett Merchants. Right fielder Gabe Rochon had two doubles for the Honkers in the game along with designated hitter Jake Hines with one double in the game. The game was all tied up at one going into the sixth inning when the Honkers went ahead 2-1. But the Merchants rallied back to with three in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 4-2.

In Honkers faced the Seattle Studs in game three of the tournament losing 3-0. Honkers Blake Fulghum pitched seven innings for the loss. Third baseman Hines had a double in the game for the Honkers. The Studs came out swinging putting up two in the first and only scoring one more again in the fifth.

In the semi-final game of the tournament at Curtis Senior High School the Honkers faced the number one seed out of round robin play the Everett Merchants losing 4-2 in a close battle. Honkers led the game going into the sixth 2-1 when the Merchants tied it up with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Merchants then put up two in the bottom of the eighth on a two run home run and the Honkers were unable to answer in the ninth to gain back the lead. Honkers Jason Salers pitched a complete game for the loss. First baseman Clayton Truex had a double for the Honkers in the game.

In the 3rd/4th game match-up the Honkers faced the Thurston County Senators losing 3-0. Honkers Bobby Wassmann threw seven innings for the loss and Justin Ansdell came in for the eighth to close the game. Senators went up early putting three up in the second inning. Honkers second baseman Kyle Mall went 3 for 4 on the day and center fielder Rochon was 2 for 3.

The Honkers face off next against the Seattle Studs Friday, July 19th at University of Puget Sound at 5:30PM. HONK HONK!!
