Honkers Drop Game One of the Double Header 5-3, Dominic Miller Still Strong as POG

The first game of the season played at Interlake high school was the first of a double header, and was one that the Honkers wish they could’ve had back. The team lost 5-3 in a 3 hour game that featured lots of walks given to the opposing team by Honker pitchers, and feature a slow offensive output for the Honkers. The Dudes jumped out early in the top of the second, with three runs off of starter Nate Butcher in that inning, and the command for Nate simply wasn’t there, as he wasn’t able to get out of the fourth inning as he walked six batters in that span. But the Honkers were still able to get back into the game by a opposite field home run by second baseman Kendall Yackley. That brought the score to 5-3 and it stayed locked at this score for the remainder of the game. Brock Bueno was also a standout in the game as he went 3-4, and benefited from being moved down in the lineup, as he seemed to be locked in and ambushing fastballs and spraying them all over the field.

The offense wasn’t able to produce much for the rest of the game but pitching standout Dominic Miller took over in the sixth inning and threw three dominant innings of relief. He topped out at 88mph and was using his fastball to attack hitters and setup his slider and changeup to leave hitters off balance. He struck out three and only gave up two hits in his work, and only had one walk which helped to limit all the chaos on the bases. In his post game interview, he pointed out that being a reliever causes him to always make his outings count, and to stay locked in while being loose at the same time is the key to his success. He also claims that staying loose is the key to doing well in doubleheader and pointed out that Zach Zurbrugg and Sean Nussbaum help to do this by being the funniest guys on the team, and always keep the dugout active and crazy.

The Honkers head to Canada next week for a tournament to British Columbia, and we look forward to keeping you updated. HONK HONK!!
